Aquatic Ecology Centre

Welcome to
AQUATIC ECOLOGY CENTRE

Message from the Founding Director Dr. Subodh Sharma, Professor of Hydrobiology

With the beginning of the year 2023, I am happy that the Aquatic Ecology Centre (AEC) has also entered into two decades of its establishment (Established on 19th Nov 2003). It has been a joyful journey that has taught me a lot of lessons experienced at this Centre. I have never given up my dreams, no matter how difficult the journey was. I acknowledge the support and express my thankfulness to all who were part of this difficult yet wonderful journey.

Nepal is blessed with abundant freshwater resources, both surface as well as groundwater. The country is often cited as one of the world’s most water rich countries. However, when it comes to use of such rich freshwater resources in improving the quality of the life of Nepalese people, there is a myopic vision of relating this source to energy production only. As a result of this thinking, there is scarcity of water for other uses. Water is life and its use must first be for subsistence of life on Earth. I am pleased that with this realization Aquatic Ecology Centre (AEC) was established in the year 2003. Financial support was received from my German classmate Mr Hasko F. Nesemann. In this way AEC became the first research centre at Kathmandu University with the motto “Soil and Water for Life”. The Centre has provided excellent platform for young researchers from applied water science background from its inception phase. Many water professionals working in Nepal and abroad have accepted that AEC has been an eye opener in their carrier path. I wish and pray for the long term sustainability of the Centre and its expansion in other locations in the country so that more young researchers benefit from service provided by us.

I will enjoy the journey together until I am tired with my world’s best staff members working at Aquatic Ecology Centre. In our togetherness as a team AEC is being built!
